Wild One

Where are you running Wild One?

            Away from slow and still

Away from roads and streets and paths

            Up the ragged windy hill

Where are you off to Wild One?

Where no one else can follow

To ride upon the sleek black tail

Of the swiftest flying swallow

Where are you going Wild One?

To where no bright lights shine

To peaks where I can see the stars

            When the nights are fine

What are you leaving Wild One?

            The gridlocked cities choked

With noise and fumes and hooting horns

            Under brown clouds cloaked

When will you come back Wild One?

            Not until the winter wind

            Sweeps the banks with snow

And strips the trees bare of their leaves

Then I’ll come back, I know
